In collaboration with Città di Palermo, Fondazione Sicilia e Museo Archeologico Regionale A. Salinas

On the occasion of the programme of cultural receptions to be held in Palermo with a view to the next edition of Manifesta 12 in 2018, the Fondazione Merz is offering its participation, based on a firm commitment to the main themes of the projects proposed by the cultural affairs department of the city’s, that also was recently named “Italian Capital of Culture 2018”.

Punte brillanti di lance is a series of exhibitions, talks and performances born from the encounter between the Fondazione Merz and Sicily developed thanks to the suggestions of Sicilian land and its peoples. The project confronts with contemporary reflection about the migrant nature of culture and the traces left on the ground.

The project will start on 10 February 2017 with the inauguration of an exhibition curated by Beatrice Merz and Laura Barreca dedicated to the Egyptian artist Wael Shawky, who won the first edition of the Mario Merz Prize. The exhibition will be hosted in the Palazzo Branciforte, a historic and aristocratic residence and now headquarters of the Fondazione Sicilia, the project’s partner, in the rooms that used to serve as storerooms for the items gathered as guarantees by the former pawn shop of the Monte di Pietà, and will include the screening of the Cabaret Crusades trilogy of films. The church of SS. Euno e Giuliano in Palermo will host the screening of another film, Al Araba Al Madfuna III, which premiered in Zurich and is now exhibited in the artist’s exhibition at the Turin site of the Fondazione Merz.

The following events will take place from Spring 2017, with the presentation of Pittore in Africa by Mario Merz, a historical record of the first half of the eighties, housed in the Museo Archeologico Regionale Antonio Salinas. The collaboration with the museum continues with the project on an urban scale called the La Via di Merz. La Via di Merz aims to create a meeting place between the antique and the contemporary, with the installation of works of art organised by the Fondazione Merz, and located along the road linking the Museo Archeologico Regionale A. Salinas to Palazzo Branciforte (via Bara all’Olivella).

The Punte brillanti di lance will continue until December 2018 to coincide with Manifesta 12.
