Fondazione Merz presents Mario Merz: La natura è l’equilibrio, a retrospective exploring the theme of nature – a fundamental subject of the artist’s 60 year practise. The Foundation’s fifth exhibition from the Merz archive since their inauguration in 2005, and the most comprehensive to date, works on display date back from the mid-1970’s until 2003, the year of Merz’s passing.
A series of carefully selected works from the collection will include some of Merz’s most important drawings, paintings, neon works, igloos and installations; presented alongside the artist’s original notebooks, unpublished sketches and extracts from past interviews.
The exhibition aims to create a poetic narrative, and visual account of an eclectic artist who was also, in many ways, a writer, mathematician and biologist. Works on display highlights the artist’s interest in the plant and animal worlds; his research on the relationship between nature and culture, his observation of growth processes, and the fundamental laws that govern the universe. The show concludes with a displayof works exploring Merz’s preoccuation with the infinite form of the spiral, mathematics, and numerical systems, illuminating his constant attempt to reorganise the pairing between culture and nature.
