The Education Department of the Fondazione Merz presents initiatives for Accademia della Luce, inspired by themes from Luigi Ontani’s Scia’mano. In this light installation, Ontani depicts himself as a shamanic figure, using lenticular holography to shift poses depending on the viewer’s perspective.
To explore the connection between the artwork and shamanism, a series of talks will delve into historical and anthropological aspects of the shamanic figure. Shamanic rituals, particularly the use of the drum in facilitating the “celestial” journey, will be central to the discussion.
The program includes a drum-making workshop and a public percussion performance. Another key element in Ontani’s work is the hand, an apotropaic symbol that becomes a sculptural mask enhancing the artist’s vision and action. Schools will also participate in creating papier-mâché sculptures as transformative devices for self-image, using photography to stage tableau vivant—a central theme in Ontani’s research.
The schedule is still being finalized, with activities planned for January to May 2025.
